Other options for weighted-curriculum education
Espoo offers versatile options for weighted-curriculum education in mathematics and natural sciences, music, dance, sports, information technology, visual arts and in performing arts. On this page, you can find instructions for applying to weighted-curriculum education.
The pupil has an opportunity to apply for weighted-curriculum education from all Espoo areas. Beginning from the third grade, the pupil has an opportunity to apply for weighed-curriculum education in mathematics and natural sciences or music. Other options begin from the seventh grade.
An application for weighted-curriculum education can be submitted using the application form on Wilma or, if necessary, using a paper form. The teaching of a pupil admitted to weighted-curriculum education will take place exclusively at the school to which they are admitted. Pupils admitted to weighted-curriculum education are not entitled to school transport subsidy and the pupil's younger sister or brother does not have a sibling basis to be admitted in the same school when enrolling to a local school.
Applying for weighted-curriculum education for the 3rd grade takes place through the electronic Wilma service between December 10th 2024 and January 10th 2025 by filling in the form Application for weighted-curriculum education for 3rd grade. If you are unable to use Wilma, you can fill in the paper form. The paper form must be submitted to your child's current school in Espoo by 10 January 2025 at the latest. In case your child is attending a private school or a school in another municipality, submit the paper form to the Finnish Basic Education Unit. The return address is infomerd in the form.

Enrolling in the 7th grade and applying for weighted-curriculum education takes place through the electronic Wilma service between January 8th and 15th 2025 by filling in the form Application for 7th grade of Comprehensive School. Entrance examinations
Your child must take part in an entrance examination at the school which is indicated on the application form as the first choice of preference offering weighted-curriculum education. The entrance examination dates are as follows:
- Mathematics and science: 20 January 2025 at 9 am. Applicants must arrive by 8:45 am at the latest. No separate invitation.
- Music: 20–24 January 2025. Applicants will receive a separate invitation by email. Please check your spam folder if the invitation has not arrived by January 19th.
- Information technologies: 21 January 2025 at 4 pm. No separate invitation.
- Dance: 22–24 January 2025. Applicants will receive a separate invitation.
- Sports: 29 January 2025 at 9 am (boys) and at 1 pm (girls) at Kauklahden koulu gymnasium. No separate invitation. Applicants are advised to arrive early and bring along proper indoor sport equipments (including indoor shoes), water bottle and light snack. The school will not offer lunch or snacks. Paikalle kannattaa saapua hieman aikaisemmin vaihtamaan varusteita ja lämmittelemään.
- Performing Arts: 23 January 2025 at 2 pm. No separate invitation.
- Visual arts: 24 January 2025. No separate invitation. Viherlaakson koulu at 12:30 pm at Vanha juhlasali, registration at 12:10 pm.

Admission to 3rd grade
Mathematics and sciences
Admission is based on an entrance exam consisting of twosections:
- Mathematics exam (0–30 points)
- Science exam (0–30 points)
In order to be admitted, an applicant must achieve the minimum total score that has been set for each section.
Pupils are admitted in the order of their total scores (0–60 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by drawing lots.
Music
Admission is based on an entrance exam consisting of four sections:
- Repetition task (0–50 points)
- Singing sample (0–40 points)
- Voluntary playing sample (0–10 points)
- Group test (0–10 points)
Pupils are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (0–110 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, the order is determined by drawing lots.
Admission to 7th grade
Performing arts
Admission is based on and assessment of the applicant's current mother tongue teacher or S2 teacher (0-2 points), statement of the current mother tongue teacher or class teacher (0-2 points) and written presentation of the student to be completed at the school offering the education (0-4 points).
Applicants are selected in order of total points (0-8 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, the order is determined by drawing lots.
Information technology
Admission is based on an entrance exam. The entrance examination consists of two sections:
- Exam consisting of tasks in the mother tongue, visual arts and information technology (0–18 points)
- Exam measuring mathematical skill and logical deduction (0–12 points).
Pupils are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (0–30 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by drawing lots.
Visual arts
Admission is based on an entrance examconsisting of two sections:
- Drawing/painting (1–10 points)
- Three-dimensional shaping or building exercise (1–10 points)
Pupils are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (2–20 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by drawing lots.
Mathematics and sciences
Admission is based on an entrance exam consisting of two sections:
- Mathematics exam (0–60 points)
- Science exam (0–40 points)
Pupils are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (0–100 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by the score of the mathematics exam. If the scores of the mathematics exam are also the same, the order is determined by drawing lots.
Music
Admission is based on an entrance exam consisting of three sections that each applicants must complete individually:
- Singing sample (0–15 points)
- Playing sample (0–15 points)
- Musicality test (0–30 points)
Pupils are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (0–60 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by the score of the musicality test. If the scores of the musicality test are also the same, the order is determined by the score of the playing sample. If even the scores of the playing samples are the same, the order will be determined by drawing lots.
Dance
Admission is based on an entrance exam and interview. The entrance exam consists of two sections that analyse focus, the ability to read and internalise movement, athletic capabilities and rhythm:
- Group section (0–60 points)
- Personal exercise (0–30 points)
Pupils are admitted in the order determined by the total score (0–100 points) of the entrance exam (0–90 points) and interview (0–10 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by drawing lots.
Sports
Admission is based on an entrance exam consisting of seven sections:
- Physical capabilities, speed/agility (0–8 points)
- Endurance (0–8 points)
- Strength/resilience (0–8 points)
- Balance (0–8 points)
- Mobility (0–8 points)
- Equipment handling skills (0–8 points)
- Optional school-specific section (0–8 points)
Pupils are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (0–56 points). In order to be admitted, an applicant must achieve the minimum total score that has been set for the exam. If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by drawing lots.

Luonnontiede ja matematiikka
LUMA-painotuksessa pyritään oppilaan oman ajattelun kehittämiseen laaja-alaisesti. Tutkiva, kokemuksellinen ja elämyksellinen oppiminen vahvistaa oppilaan myönteistä ympäristö- ja luontosuhdetta sekä ongelmanratkaisutaitoja.
Oppilasvalinnan perusteena on valintakoe, joka koostuu matematiikan ja luonnontieteiden osioista. Kokeessa mitataan 2. luokan opetussuunnitelman mukaisia tietoja, taitoja ja osaamista.
Musiikki
Musiikkipainotuksessa opiskellaan musiikkia monipuolisesti. Opetuksessa painottuvat yhdessä tekeminen ja omien taitojen kehittäminen. Musiikkipainotusta tarjoavissa kouluissa on orkesteri-, kuoro ja bänditoimintaa. Musaoppilaat esiintyvät usein koulujen omissa juhlissa ja tapahtumissa sekä koulun ulkopuolella yhteistyötahojen tilaisuuksissa.
Oppilasvalinnan perusteena on valintakoe, joka koostuu neljästä osiosta: toistotehtävä, laulunäyte (pakollinen laulu Hämä-hämä-häkki sekä vapaavalintainen laulu), vapaaehtoinen soittonäyte ja yhteissoittotesti.
