Other options for weighted-curriculum education

Applying for weighted-curriculum education for the 3rd grade takes place through the electronic Wilma service between December 16th 2025 and January 9th 2026 by filling in the form Application for weighted-curriculum education for 3rd grade. If you are unable to use Wilma, you can fill in the paper form. The paper form must be submitted to your child's current school in Espoo by 9 January 2026 at the latest. In case your child is attending a private school or a school in another municipality, submit the paper form to the Finnish Basic Education Unit. The return address is infomerd in the form.

Your child must take part in an entrance examination at the school which is indicated on the application form as the first choice of preference offering weighted-curriculum education. The entrance examination dates are as follows:

• Mathematics and science: January 19January 2026 at 9:00. Applicants will not receive a separate invitation. Registration for the entrance examination takes place between 8:15–8:45.
• Music: 20–26 January 2026. Applicants will receive a separate invitation by email. Please check your spam folder if the invitation has not arrived by January 19th.
• Information technologies: 20 January 2026 at 2 pm. – 5 pm. Applicants will not receive a separate invitation. Registration for the entrance examination begins at 1:40 pm. in the Auditorium.
• Dance: 21-23 January 2026. Applicants will receive a separate invitation.
• Sports: 28 January 2026 from 9 am. to 12 pm. (boys) and from 12:30 pm. to 3:30 pm. (girls) at Kauklahden koulu gymnasium. No separate invitation. Applicants are advised to arrive early and bring along proper indoor sport equipments (including indoor shoes), water bottle and light snack. The school will not offer lunch or snacks. Please arrive earlier in order to change your gear and warm up.
• Performing Arts: 22 January 2026 at 2 pm. Applicants will not receive a separate invitation.
• Visual arts: 
  Viherlaakson koulu 23 January 2026 from 12 pm to 3 pm. Applicants will not receive a separate invitation.

Admission is based on an entrance exam consisting of twosections:

1. Mathematics exam (0–30 points)
2. Science exam (0–30 points)

In order to be admitted, an applicant must achieve the minimum total score that has been set for each section. 

Pupils are admitted in the order of their total scores (0–60 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by drawing lots.

Admission is based on an entrance exam consisting of four sections:

1. Repetition task (0–50 points)
2. Singing sample (0–40 points)
3. Voluntary playing sample (0–10 points)
4. Group test (0–10 points)

Pupils are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (0–110 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, the order is determined by drawing lots.

Admission is based on and assessment of the applicant's current mother tongue teacher or S2 teacher (0-2 points), statement of the current mother tongue teacher or class teacher (0-2 points) and written presentation of the student to be completed at the school offering the education (0-4 points).

Applicants are selected in order of total points (0-8 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, the order is determined by drawing lots.

Admission is based on an entrance exam. The entrance examination consists of two sections:

1. Exam consisting of tasks in the mother tongue, visual arts and information technology (0–18 points)
2. Exam measuring mathematical skill and logical deduction (0–12 points).

Pupils are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (0–30 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by drawing lots. 

Admission is based on an entrance examconsisting of two sections:

1. Drawing/painting (1–10 points)
2. Three-dimensional shaping or building exercise (1–10 points)

Pupils are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (2–20 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by drawing lots. 

Admission is based on an entrance exam consisting of two sections:

1. Mathematics exam (0–60 points)
2. Science exam (0–40 points)

Pupils are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (0–100 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by the score of the mathematics exam. If the scores of the mathematics exam are also the same, the order is determined by drawing lots.

Admission is based on an entrance exam consisting of three sections that each applicants must complete individually:

1. Singing sample (0–15 points)
2. Playing sample (0–15 points)
3. Musicality test (0–30 points)

Pupils are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (0–60 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by the score of the musicality test. If the scores of the musicality test are also the same, the order is determined by the score of the playing sample. If even the scores of the playing samples are the same, the order will be determined by drawing lots.

Admission is based on an entrance exam and interview. The entrance exam consists of two sections that analyse focus, the ability to read and internalise movement, athletic capabilities and rhythm:

1. Group section (0–60 points)
2. Personal exercise (0–30 points)

Pupils are admitted in the order determined by the total score (0–100 points) of the entrance exam (0–90 points) and interview (0–10 points). If two or more applicants have the same total score, their order will be determined by drawing lots.

Admission is based on an entrance exam consisting of seven sections:

1. Physical capabilities, speed/agility (0–8 points)
2. Endurance (0–8 points)
3. Strength/resilience (0–8 points)
4. Balance (0–8 points)
5. Mobility (0–8 points)
6. Equipment handling skills (0–8 points)
7. Optional school-specific section (0–8 points)

Pupils are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (0–56 points). In order to be admitted, an applicant must achieve the minimum total score that has been set for the exam. Weighted-curriculum education in mathematics and natural sciences develops pupils’ thinking in many ways. Inquiry-based and experiential learning strengthens pupils’ positive relationship with the environment and nature as well as their problem-solving skills.

Pupil admission is based on an entrance examination that includes sections related to both mathematics and natural sciences. The examination tests the applicants’ skills and knowledge based on the 2nd grade curriculum.

• Meritorin koulu

Weighted-curriculum education in music allows pupils to study music in a versatile way. Lessons emphasise collaboration and developing pupils’ individual skills. The schools that offer weighted-curriculum education in music have orchestra, choir and band activities. Music pupils often perform at various school events as well as at events held by partner organisations outside the school.

Pupil admission is based on an entrance examination that includes four parts: a repetition task, a singing test (‘Hämä-hämä-häkki’ as the mandatory song and a song of the applicant’s choice), an optional instrumental performance and an ensemble test.

Through weighted-curriculum education in performing arts, pupils learn to express themselves in versatile and responsible ways and to interpret the communication of others. Pupils develop their self-awareness, creativity and social skills through various methods, including physical and spoken expression, voice exercises, scriptwriting, costume design, stage design and improvisation.

Pupil admission is based on an entrance examination in the form of a writing test. Applicants have two hours to write their texts. No advance preparation is required.

Weighted-curriculum education in information technology (IT) covers topics such as the structure of a computer, web design, Python programming and the use of office software. Pupils complete a final project on a topic of their choice, for example a programming project or a video. In addition to lessons, pupils gain experience in information and communication technology by working on the school’s own TV channel, Saarni-TV, and taking part in information channel activities.

Pupil admission is based on an entrance examination with two sections: a mathematics test and an IT-related test that assesses applicants’ skills in the Finnish language, visual arts and information technology.

• Saarnilaakson koulu

Weighted-curriculum education in visual arts introduces pupils to various forms of visual expression from drawing, painting, modelling and construction to digital work. The aim is to deepen and broaden pupils’ personal relationship with visual arts and visual culture and to help them set goals for their own artistic work and for exploring the visual world.

Pupil admission is based on an entrance examination with two tasks: a drawing or painting task and a three-dimensional clay modelling task. No prior experience is required for the modelling task.

All necessary tools and materials are provided by the school. Applicants cannot use their own tools or materials. The art teachers supervising the examination provide guidance and support if necessary. Applicants have 90 minutes to complete each task.

• Kauklahden koulu

Pupils attending weighted-curriculum education get to deepen and broaden their understanding of mathematics and natural sciences. Particular attention is paid to understanding different concepts and developing pupils’ thinking, problem-solving skills and creativity alongside subject content. Visits and excursions, experimental approaches to science, and versatile use of technology and mathematical learning tools are part of experiential learning. Through various activities, collaboration and learning, pupils gain exciting learning experiences and a strong foundation for further studies.

Pupil admission is based on an entrance examination with two sections: a mathematics test and a natural sciences test. Participation does not require knowledge of lower secondary school content. The tests are based on the primary school syllabuses (mathematics content from grades 1–5) and pupils’ interest in the subjects. The natural sciences test includes a wide range of questions related to biology, physics, chemistry and geography. Many of them measure applicants’ reasoning and ability to explain things instead of memorised facts. Applicants have 90 minutes to complete the examination. Both tests are handed out at the same time.

Weighted-curriculum education in music allows pupils to study music in a versatile way through singing, playing instruments, listening and movement. Our strengths include a strong sense of community, excellent performance and rehearsal facilities and high-quality musical equipment. Pupils get to create their own performances for school celebrations and other events.

Pupil admission is based on an entrance examination that takes about 10–15 minutes, depending on the applicant’s performance. The examination consists of a singing and instrumental performance and a musicality test. The instrumental performance may also be given by singing if the applicant does not have their own instrument

Through weighted-curriculum education in dance, pupils are introduced to show dance and a wide range of other dance styles. Pupils get to try different dances, learn more about dance technique and develop their creativity through improvisation in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. They work together to create performances in which everyone can use their strengths and show their personality. The aim is to encourage pupils to find their own way of expressing themselves through dance and enjoy performing in a safe and supportive environment.

Pupil admission is based on an entrance examination with three parts: a group dance class (including a warm-up, technique section and dance routine choreographed by the teacher), a solo dance (1–2 minutes with music, dance style and theme chosen by the applicant), and an interview.

• Mainingin koulu

At our Urhea schools, we have a positive and flexible attitude to pupils’ sports activities. For example, support is available to pupils if they are absent from school due to training or competitions. We also guarantee our pupils the opportunity to participate in Tuesday morning training sessions.

Pupil admission is based on an entrance examination that assesses applicants’ basic physical skills as well as sport-specific skills.
