The city website has plenty of information about the nature and environment in Espoo. For example, did you know that up to 60 per cent of Espoo’s land area is covered by forests? Or that the shady groves of the Glomsinjoki river are the only place in Finland where the beetle species Bembidion monticola can be found? Diversity is present everywhere in Espoo, even underwater. The local shallow bays are important breeding grounds for fish.

The forests, bays and archipelago of Espoo are home to a wide range of birds. Getting into birdwatching is easy, as you can start by observing the birds in your own yard. Excellent stops for a birdwatching tour include Laajalahti and the birdwatching towers in Finnoo.Photo: Noelle Renberg

Espoo is full of diverse nature and sites suitable for outdoor recreation. When spending time outdoors, stick to the marked routes and existing paths to protect nature from the impacts of heavy use. The page Explore nature has information about the different excursion destinations Espoo, including nature paths, birdwatching towers and archipelago.

Dogs are excellent companions for spending time outdoors, as they often enjoy being in nature as much as their humans do. Just remember to keep your dog on a leash when exploring nature. This helps ensure that birds and animals raise their young in their nests in peace.Photo: Noelle Renberg

The valuable natural sites of Espoo are presented in the book Kotinurkilta kallioille – Espoon luontokohteet (2021). The sites covered in the book can be found by listed city district in an electronic form on the page Natural sites in Espoo. Good destinations for a summer trip include the lush groves of the Glimsinjoki river, the verdant forests of Espoo Central Park and the Bergö birdwatching tower with gorgeous views of the Suvisaaristo archipelago. The archipelago boat keeps landlubbers dry when transporting them to the outer archipelago of Espoo.

Guided nature excursions are held in Espoo all year round. The excursions always have free admission. They range from activity-based family trips to more demanding tours intended for adults.
