The master plan prepares for Espoo’s growth and strengthens the operational integrity of the city structure through infilling with attention paid to service needs and creating the conditions for functional public transport. The Master plan for the northern and central areas of Espoo was partially approved by the City Council on 15 November 2021. In its decision of 21 February 2024, the Supreme Administrative Court did not grant leave to appeal and dismissed one appeal. After this, the plan entered into force on 13 March 2024. Now, detailed planning continues in the area.

The current master plan for the northern areas of Espoo came into force in 1997, and it can no longer meet the challenges posed by the growing Metropolitan Area and changing city. The master plan for the northern and central areas of Espoo steers the housing construction, workplace areas and transport network of the coming decades as a whole. When housing and workplaces are concentrated in the centres, the natural and cultural environments in the areas surrounding them can be preserved. According to the master plan for the northern and central areas of Espoo, the existing Kalajärvi centre in the area will be developed further, and new local centres will be built along public transport routes. At the same time, conditions for sufficient housing production and functional public transport will be created.
