Enrolling in pre-primary education and comprehensive school in Espoo begins on 9 January

In January, we will already be looking ahead to the next school year. Guardians must enroll their children born in 2018 in pre-primary education and children born in 2017 in the first grade of basic education. Pre-primary education and basic education are available in Finnish and Swedish. In Espoo, the autumn term for pre-primary education, basic education and general upper secondary education starts on Thursday 8 August 2024.

Enrolling in pre-primary education between 9 and 26 January 2024 

Pre-primary education for children born in 2018 begins in Espoo on 9 August 2024. Pre-primary education is provided free of charge in day-care centres and schools for four hours a day. 

Enrolment for pre-primary education in the 2024–2025 school year takes place on 9–26 January 2024. You enrol with an electronic application in the eVaka service at espoonvarhaiskasvatus.fi. You can log into the service by identifying yourself through suomi.fi, which requires an electronic banking password or mobile certificate.

If necessary, help with filling in the application is also available from Hello Espoo Info at the Service Centre of the Iso Omena shopping centre. You can find the opening hours of Hello Espoo Info here.

In addition, service coordinators from the Finnish Early Childhood Education service guidance will be at Hello Espoo Info to help guardians with the online application on Tuesday 16 January 2024 from 10:00 to 16:00 (lunch break 11:30–12:30) and on Wednesday 17 January 2024 from 10:00 to 17:00 (lunch break 11:30–12:30). Please bring your own device (mobile phone or computer) with you. You can log into eVaka using your online banking codes or mobile ID.

Enrolling in the 1st grade of comprehensive school between 9 and 19 January 2024 

Children born in 2017 shall be enrolled in the first grade of comprehensive school by their guardians through Wilma between 9 and 19 January 2024. Also, the children whose school start has been postponed in the school year 2023–2024 shall be enrolled in the first grade. 

All guardians of school newcomers living in Espoo will receive a notification of beginning of compulsory education, which contains a key code for creating a personal Wilma account. With the notification, guardians will receive a brochure Welcome to school!, which contains information on applying to school and important dates.

If the child can attend school in both Finnish and Swedish, you can choose whether to enrol the child in a Finnish-speaking or Swedish-speaking school. 

Enrolling in the 7th grade of comprehensive school between 9 and 16 January 2024 

Enrolling in the 7th grade of comprehensive school takes place through the electronic Wilma-service between 9 and 16 January 2024. In questions related to Wilma accounts, the guardians may contact the pupil’s current school. The guardians will receive information from their child’s school.

Applying for weighted-curriculum education for the 3rd grade between 12 December and 12 January 

Beginning from the third grade, the pupil has an opportunity to apply for weighed-curriculum education. The guardians will receive information from their child’s school. 

Applying for weighted-curriculum education for the 3rd grade takes place through the electronic Wilma service between 12 December 2023 and 12 January 2024. If you are unable to use the Wilma service, you can fill in the paper form. The paper form must be submitted to your child's current school in Espoo by 12 January 2024 at the latest.

Applying for afternoon activities by 10 May 2024

The application time for afternoon activities for the coming school year 2024–2025 is from 26 April to 10 May 2024. Espoo organises afternoon activities for pupils in grades 1 and 2 and for pupils requiring special support after the school day. Applying takes place electronically in Wilma.
