Enrolling in pre-primary education and comprehensive school in Espoo begins on 10 January

If the child is able to study both in Finnish and Swedish, the guardians may themselves choose in which to enroll the child. Scroll down for more information about Swedish-language education in Espoo.

The registration period for pre-primary education for the school year 2022–2023 is 10–21 January 2022. Please register using the electronic pre-primary education application on espoonvarhaiskasvatus.fi(external link) that will be available on the 10th of January.

Pre-primary education day-care centres and schools offer early childhood education in the morning before the start of pre-primary education and in the afternoon after pre-primary education. The early childhood education is subject to a charge. Early childhood education connected to pre-primary education is applied for using the same application form as for the pre-primary education place. Exceptions to this are some of the pre-primary education places offered by outsourced and private day-care centres.

Children born in 2015 shall be enrolled in the first grade of comprehensive school by their guardians through Wilma between 10 and 21 January 2022. Also, the children whose school start has been postponed in the school year 2021–2022 shall be enrolled in the first grade.

All guardians of school newcomers living in Espoo will receive a notification of beginning of compulsory education, which contains a key code for creating a personal Wilma account. With the notification, guardians will receive a brochure Welcome to school!, which contains information on applying to school and important dates.

Enrolling in the 7th grade of comprehensive school takes place through the electronic Wilma-service between 10 and 18 January 2022. In questions related to Wilma accounts, the guardians may contact the pupil’s current school.

The guardians will receive information from their child’s school. Additional information on enrolling in the local school and applying for other forms of education (such as weighted-curriculum education, English-language education and bilingual education) is available in English on page School Admissions.

Pupils in weighted-curriculum education study the weighted subject more than those in mainstream education. Pupils in the 2nd grade can apply for weighted-curriculum studies in mathematics and science focus and/or in music between 14 December 2021 and 14 January 2022. Guardians are advised to familiarize themselves with the page Weighted-Curriculum education before filling in the application form.

Afternoon activities in basic education are after school group activities in which one adult instructs a group of 15 children. The application period to Espoo Finnish-speaking basic education's afternoon activities is 10 January – 16 May 2022.

Pupils in 1st and 2nd grade as well as pupils with a special needs education decision can apply for the activities. The application process takes place through Wilma.

Espoo offers versatile foreign-language education: English-language education in Espoo International School and bilingual education (Finnish-English) in several comprehensive schools. It is possible to apply for foreign-language education already from the first grade.

Espoo International School follows the Finnish National Curriculum and delivers basic education in grades 1–6 and offers the Middle Years Programme (MYP) within a three year period to grade 7–9 students. In Espoo there are 11 Swedish-language pre-primary education places and 11 basic education schools. The curriculum is taught entirely in Swedish.

The application period for Swedish pre-primary education and basic education is between 10 and 21 January 2022. Application period for afternoon activities in Swedish is 10 January – 25 April 2022.

Admissions to vocational education and training and general upper secondary education take place through the joint application. Application period takes place between 22 February and 22 March 2022. Possible entrance and aptitude tests are in April-May 2022. In Omnia there are no entrance or aptitude tests held.

Preparatory education for programs leading to an upper secondary qualification, or TUVA education, will be launched on 1 August 2022. Applications for TUVA education will be submitted in the joint application procedure 22 February–22 March 2022.

TUVA education will be offered by Omnia(external link), the Joint Authority of Education in the Espoo Region.
