Afternoon activities and care for pupils

Afternoon activities are guided group-based leisure activities, where one adult is in charge of a group of 15 children. Afternoon activities are provided after the school day for pupils in grades 1-2 and for pupils receiving support for learning and school attendance. Afternoon activities include play, physical activities, and arts and crafts. A snack is also served. Afternoon activities are organised by schools and private service providers on school premises. The application for afternoon activities covers the entire school year. Activities are not organised during school holidays or on Saturday school days. The children participating in afternoon activities are insured and covered by the City of Espoo's accident insurance. Afternoon activities are subject to a fee. It is possible to apply for a reduction of the client fee. In addition to afternoon activities, many schools host their own clubs as well as recreational activities provided by partner organisations. Residents' parks also have their own activities in some areas. Morning, afternoon and holiday care for pupils with special needs is intended for children who have a valid decision, based on the Disability Services Act or the Act on Special Care for People with Intellectual Disabilities, regarding the provision of morning and afternoon care or holiday care. Guardians apply for a service decision through the Disability Services of the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County.
