Sustainable Kera

Kera is a new district being built in the heart of Espoo. Its development focuses on sustainable development experiments and nature-oriented, community-based living.

In the coming years, the former industrial and logistics area will transform into a sustainable district of 16,000 residents. Kera is being built close to existing services and transport connections: Leppävaara and Helsinki city centre are just a short train ride away, Ring Road II makes travelling by car easier, and Nihtisilta already offers shops and restaurants. In the future, Kera’s centre – designed primarily for walking and cycling – will also feature its own service cluster with day care centres, a school and recreational facilities. The construction of Kera started in 2023.

Kera aims to become an internationally interesting model area for the circular economy and sustainable development. It is being built sustainably, favouring low-carbon, circular economy solutions that respect nature and support social sustainability. Already during its planning and construction phases, Kera has served as a testing ground for many new solutions that have attracted both national and international interest.

Kera as a future residential area

Over the coming years, Kera will become home for 16,000 residents. The pedestrian- and cycling-friendly centre will feature a variety of housing options for different needs, its own service cluster, and a wide range of hobby and recreational opportunities.

Kera and sustainable development

The principles of sustainable development have guided the development of Kera from the beginning. Already during its planning and construction phases, Kera has served as a testing ground for many innovative low-carbon, circular economy and nature-positive solutions. For residents, Kera aims to offer the best possible conditions for a sustainable lifestyle.

Temporary use of Keran Hallit

The temporary use of Keran Hallit from 2019 to 2025 is one of the area’s best-known sustainable development experiments. A former logistics centre was transformed, before its demolition, into a unique hub for art, events, sports and small businesses.

Kera art programme

Public art will give the new district a unique atmosphere and identity. In line with the Kera art programme, five spectacular artworks by Finnish and European artists have been selected for the area. All the works reflect the area’s long history with ceramics. The art programme was prepared in connection with the detailed planning of Kera.
