In the area covered by the sewerage network, domestic wastewater must be discharged to the network, from which it reaches the central wastewater treatment plant. In Espoo, the sewerage network is operated by the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY), with the exception of individual regional treatment plants.
In sparsely populated areas, outside the sewerage network, the property owner takes care of the treatment of domestic wastewater with a property-specific treatment system.
