Principles of safer spaces in sports and exercise
With the principles and practices of safer spaces in sports and exercise, our aim is to create spaces in which everyone strives to build an equal, respectful and open atmosphere and discussion through their own actions. The purpose of the principles is to make every person feel welcome in the context of our spaces and services. Everyone needs the opportunity be themselves and express themselves freely. All of us bear the responsibility for a safer operating environment.
Customers
- I treat everyone equally regardless of their background, skills, fitness or other attributes. I let everyone engage in sports in their own way; I don’t evaluate others’ performances.
- I take others into account – I greet others, help when needed and consider all participants. I respect the space of other people and let everyone engage in the physical activities in peace.
- I am kind and helpful – Kindness, courtesy and helpfulness make a space pleasant and safe for everyone.
- I address inappropriate behaviour – If I witness inappropriate behaviour, I address it and report it to the staff.
- I keep the spaces clean and equipment intact – I follow the rules and keep the shared spaces and equipment in good condition. I report any issues or deficiencies to the staff.

- We create a pleasant environment. We ensure that the premises are clean and the equipment is functional. We guide customers as needed. We make sure that our premises and services are as accessible as possible to all customers.
- We provide clear rules and instructions. We make sure that they are understandable and easily available.
- We don’t hesitate to address inappropriate behaviour. We make sure that the rules are followed.

If I notice discrepancies or inappropriate behaviour in the context of sports and exercise spaces or services and report them to the staff immediately.
The principles of safer spaces have been prepared in cooperation with the customers and employees of the Espoo Sports and Exercise services in 2024.
