Natural sites in Espoo Central Park

The 880-hectare Espoo Central Park is a forest area located in the middle of the city, also featuring formerly and currently cultivated fields. After Nuuksio National Park, it is the second largest contiguous green area in Espoo. The Central Park includes seven protected areas and several other natural sites. It is also an important outdoor and recreational area. By following the Tikankierros nature trail, you can easily reach Central Park’s glacial potholes, the Mössenkärr nature reserve and the Rönnängen meadow.

Mössenkärr was once a field created by draining a wetland. It was cultivated until the mid-1960s, after which it was dammed into a pond. The Mössenkärr pond and the surrounding willow swamp are important for many insects and birds, among others. To the north of the pond is a valuable traditional landscape of half a hectare, whose flowering meadow plants are important for butterflies, among others.Photo: Jussi Helimäki
