Streets and trafficEspoonlahti

Espoo Public Works Department is currently preparing street and park plans for the Mårtensbro town plan area as well as traffic and street arrangements for the connected Espoonlahdenkatu, Ulappakatu and Espoonlahdenranta areas. Technical Services Committee approved plans on 14 June 2023.

Kajuuttakuja is a new street that is connected to Espoonlahdenkatu and is a dead end for motor vehicle traffic. As indicated in the town plan, the southwest end is an access street and the northeast end is a driveway. The access street section ends with a turning point. Kajuuttakuja features car access to the resident parking facilities of blocks 34339 and 34340 (approx. 175 parking spaces in total), which are delineated by the street area. The street also features pedestrian, bicycle and maintenance vehicle access to the yard decks of blocks 34339, 34340 and 34341. The street provides pedestrian and bicycle access to the Märssypolku diagonal pedestrian and bicycle street in the Mårtensbro town plan area. The access street section of Kajuuttakuja is asphalted and reinforced with kerbstones. On both sides of the roadway, there are concrete stone lanes for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. In terms of the cityscape, these areas are fairly open with some stands of trees.

Märssypolku is a new pedestrian and bicycle traffic street that cuts through the Mårtensbro town plan area and connects to the Espoonranta parallel pedestrian and bicycle road in the north west and to the Märssykorinaukio pedestrian and bicycle road in north east. Märssypuisto is located near the middle of Märssypolku. The Märssypolku street is asphalted and features kerbstones on one side. In the narrow sections, the edges will be finished off with natural stone. Some sections have room for planting bushes and trees. The western end of the street features larger contiguous green areas with grass and meadows.

Märssypuisto (VP-1), as indicated in the town plan, is a park area by Märssypolku. In the north east, it ends with a residential block, in which new buildings are to be constructed. Pedestrian access to this block is available through the park area. The park features a fenced playground, access routes, seats, and planted trees and bushes. Surface water from the park and other public areas in its vicinity are channelled to the green areas. The surface profiles of the green areas are utilised to support the access routes and stormwater channelling in the area.

Märssykorinaukio is a new access street that is connected to Ulappakatu and is a dead end for motor vehicle traffic.  The Märssykorinaukio roadway ends with a turning point. A separate parking area for six cars is available to the north east of the turning point. In addition to this, six parking spaces are available on the south east side of the turning point. Car access is available from Märssykorinaukio to the resident parking facility of block 34341 to the north. Pedestrian, bicycle and maintenance vehicle access is also available to the yard deck of the block in question. Both single-lane roadways of Märssykorinaukio are asphalted and feature kerbstones. The roadways are separated with a strip of green area in between. This strip is also used to absorb and hold back stormwater. An asphalted combined pedestrian and bicycle path is located to the south west as an extension of Märssypolku. Several individual trees with wide canopies will be planted in Märssykorinaukio. The separating lanes will be paved with natural stone.
Some changes to the traffic and street arrangements of Espoonlahdenkatu, Ulappakatu and Espoonlahdenranta will also be made based on the Mårtensbro area town plan.

A parallel intersection will be added from Kajuuttakuja to Espoonlahdenkatu. In addition to this, the Espoonlahdenkatu street area has been expanded in the north east direction for the section between Kajuuttakuja and Ulappakatu. This area is a pedestrian path. A maintenance area dimensioned for 12-metre-long lorries has been added to the side of the Espoonlahdenkatu roadway between Kajuuttakuja and Ulappakatu.

An intersection to Märssykorinaukio will be added as a fourth branch to Ulappakatu in the current T intersection of Ulappakatu and Tähystäjänkatu. The intersection will be converted into a “turbo roundabout”, and trees will be planted in the green area in its centre. The Ulappakatu roadway lanes to the north east of the roundabout will be rearranged. A maintenance area dimensioned for 12-metre-long lorries for maintenance access to block 34339 has been added to the side of the Märssykorinaukio–Espoonlahdenkatu roadway.

The Espoonlahdenranta street area has been narrowed down to the north east from the Espoonlahdenkatu and Espoonlahdenranta intersection. This will result in the Espoonlahdenranta parallel pedestrian and bicycle path being moved.

The street areas, squares and park areas will be illuminated with light posts. In some areas, continued planning will explore the possibility of installing small-scale specialised lighting in connection to the Ulappakatu roundabout and Märssypuisto playground, for example.

Stormwater drains will be constructed for the streets and connected to existing stormwater sewers outside the town plan area. In addition to the drain and sewer arrangements, stormwater flow in the area is slowed down by means of green areas in the street and park areas,  the water is channelled into the stormwater sewers.

Accessibility in the public areas is at the basic level. The specialised level is also reached organically in many locations. The arrangements have been designed to support sustainable development and biodiversity, within the framework enabled by the town plan.

The planning process was launched in spring 2022, and the street and park plan proposals will be presented in spring 2023. The parties concerned will be notified by letter of the presentation in public. The construction is scheduled to start at the turn of the year 2023–2024.

Commenting the drafts is possible at the resident event or by email until 27 December 2022.
