European Mobility Week 2026 – What has Espoo done to promote cycling this year?

Cycling is an excellent, everyday form of getting around in terms of the environment, urban space and health. This past year, Espoo has worked to promote cycling in various, diverse ways. These are some highlights of our actions.

• This spring, the City Board approved the updated cycling promotion programme, which puts together the objectives and measures to develop cycling in the coming years. The main objective of the programme is to make cycling in Espoo attractive and safe for everyone and to get more people on bicycles.
• This summer, the city completed its extensive cycling route signage project, which involved the installation of new signage for cycling routes around Espoo. The aim of this project was to make cycling easier with clear and uniform signage around the city.

• This year, the city has also worked to make cycling visible in the urban environment with new displays that show the volume of cycling traffic in Tapiola and Otaniemi. These displays, which complement the existing network of cycling traffic counters, allow passers-by to see the daily and annual numbers of cyclists along the cycling routes.
• Rantaradanbaana is the largest cycling investment in the history of Espoo. It aims to complement the Espoo Rail Line by providing a high-quality and quick long-distance route that separates the two cycling directions from each other and from pedestrians. Construction of the Rantaradanbaana project is underway. The route will open in stages as the construction work is completed.
• Construction is underway for Espoo’s first cycle zone: The section of Hiidentie running parallel to the railway tracks will be converted into a cycle zone with a pavement for pedestrians. Cars and other motor vehicles are allowed to drive in the cycle zone, but drivers must adjust their speed to other road users and give way to cyclists and pedestrians.
• The City of Espoo’s cycling stand drew a large crowd at the Aalto Welcome Fair in Otaniemi this August Freshmen and other interested passers-by got to learn about the opportunities of cycling in Espoo and about the city’s sustainable mobility projects under the Be seen and heard in traffic theme.
