Hiidentie cycle zone plan approved

2.4.2026 12.02

Espoo’s first cycle zone was approved by the Technical Services Committee on 25 March 2026. The section of Hiidentie running parallel to the railway tracks will be converted into a cycle zone with a pavement for pedestrians. Located between Kera and Kauniainen, the new cycle zone will be part of Rantaradanbaana running from Leppävaara to Espoon keskus.

Hiidentie, a dead-end residential street in an area of detached houses, continues in Kauniainen as Forsellesintie. The cycle zone will be built in Espoo and Kauniainen using uniform solutions. In connection with the construction of the cycle zone, the lighting will be improved and the carriageway will be paved with red asphalt.

Motor vehicles give way to cyclists

Cars and other motor vehicles are allowed to drive in a cycle zone, but drivers must adjust their speed to cycling speed and give way to cyclists. In a cycle zone, cyclists have the right of way. When a car meets a cyclist, the driver must adjust their speed to the cyclist’s speed or steer to the side to pass the cyclist. There are separate pavements for pedestrians.

The aim is to complete the construction of the Hiidentie cycle zone in 2027. The estimated construction costs are EUR 530,000.
