Let’s pick up a million bags of litter together!
The City of Espoo has joined Yle’s national ‘Miljoona roskapussia’ campaign. During the campaign from 13 April to 14 June 2023, everyone is encouraged to pick up litter alone or together with other people. Various municipalities and other organisations and communities in different parts of Finland are participating in the campaign. This important campaign is also a light-hearted contest between Finnish municipalities
Yle will provide a great deal of information about the campaign through its channels. The campaign will be launched live on Yle TV1 and Yle Areena on Thursday 13 April at 20:00, and the results will be announced on Yle TV1 and Yle Areena on 14 June at 20:00.
A group of familiar faces from Yle are involved in the clean-up campaign, including journalists Mikko “Peltsi” Peltola, Inka Henelius and Olli Haapakangas and meteorologists Anniina Valtonen and Kerttu Kotakorpi. The patron of the campaign is Dr. Jenni Haukio, the spouse of the President of Finland.
How can I take part in the campaign?
It is easy to participate:
- You only need a litter picker, gloves and an empty trash bag.
- Go outside – alone or with other people.
- Pick up litter in your area.
- Once the bag is full, put it in a waste container.
- Go to the campaign webpage at yle.fi/miljoonaroskapussia(external link, opens in a new window) (only in Finnish) and enter the number of bags in the real-time counter under the municipality where you picked up the litter.
- Challenge your friends to participate!
Where do I get the equipment and where should I put the litter?
You can use a trash bag of any size. If you need equipment, such as litter pickers or larger trash bags, you need to sign up as an organiser of a clean-up event. This will help us ensure that we have enough equipment for everyone. The sign-up form is available here(external link, opens in a new window).
You can throw the litter in the city’s waste containers or leave the bags next to the containers to avoid overfilling them. Inform our customer service (tel. +358 9 81625100) of the location of the bags. Our maintenance staff will then pick them up.
