How did we implement circularity in Espoo in 2022? This year, we reported, for the first time, on the progress of the circular economy through a compilation that covers all the measures taken by the city in 2022.

At the end of 2020, we signed the Europe-wide circular economy commitment Circular Cities Declaration, the ten goals of which promote the implementation of the city’s circular economy. The circular economy commitment supports our goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2030 and achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as a pioneer city. As part of the commitment, we implement ten circular economy objectives and report on our progress. We compiled the ‘Circular economy in 2022’ annual report on the 2022 measures. The annual report contains information on how the ten objectives progressed in Espoo in 2022.

What is the circular economy?

Circular economy is based on the idea of using resources efficiently. Natural resources are used sparingly, products and materials are kept in the cycle for as long as possible, and the amount of waste and leftovers generated during production and consumption is minimised. For example sharing, repairing, reusing and reuse of materials are means of the circular economy to prolong the service life of products and materials.

We will develop the reporting and presentation of the next year’s data on the basis of the feedback we receive.
