Circular Economy Hub in Kiviruukki (2024–2026)
The aim of the project is to develop an internationally appealing hub for circular economy business and expertise in Kiviruukki, along with a multidisciplinary cooperation network. Taking into account the opportunities and limitations related to land use in the area, the goal is to integrate an urban residential area with circular economy business and RDI activities in a way that makes it easy to live and operate in the area.
Circular Economy Hub in Kiviruukki is an important sustainable development project led by the City of Espoo. The aim of the project is to develop an internationally appealing hub for circular economy business and expertise in Kiviruukki, along with a multidisciplinary cooperation network. The project will focus in particular on developing suitable conditions for the circular economy of textiles and plastics and a sustainable food system. As a continuation of the cooperation established in the Implementation Pathway for Environments that Accelerate Sustainable Growth (KETO) project, a centre of expertise for clean technology and a business park will be built in Kiviruukki. This circular economy ecosystem will bring together innovations, expertise, international networks, test environments, shared use, and services.
Taking into account the opportunities and limitations related to land use in Kiviruukki, the goal is to integrate an urban residential area with circular economy business and RDI activities in a way that makes it easy to live and operate in the area. In addition to companies, Cleantech Garden will include Omnia, the City of Espoo and the current VTT Bioruukki, which is a pilot centre for new bio-based products and circular economy solutions.
In parallel with the Kiviruukki project, the Sustainable Future Districts project develops solutions under four themes related to the built environment: clean energy, low-carbon construction and the circular economy, sustainable transport, and nature-based solutions. These themes are promoted through experiments, competitions and pilots with the aim of creating new sustainable solutions and innovations in the city. The projects will accelerate the achievement of Espoo’s goals related to sustainable development and carbon neutrality in the growing city.
The Circular Economy Hub in Kiviruukki project runs from 1 March 2024 to 31 May 2026.
