Enrolment for pre-primary education for the 2026–2027 school year

Enrolment for the new shool year of pre-primary education takes place annually in January.

Pre-primary education for children born in 2020 will begin in Espoo on 13 August 2026. The enrolment period for the 2026–2027 school year is 8–20 January 2026.

Pre-primary education is free of charge and is provided in municipal day care centres and schools Mon–Fri from 9.00 to 13.00. In addition, pre-primary education is organised at outsourced early childhood education units and service voucher daycare centers as well as other private daycare centers.

Pre-primary education follows the school year’s schedules and holidays. You can find more information about the schedules here.

How to enrol for pre-primary education

A list of Finnish-language pre-primary education units is available here. The list includes both municipal and private service providers. Some units also offer Swedish language immersion or Finnish-English pre-primary education.

A list of Swedish-speaking pre-primary education units is available here. Swedish-speaking pre-primary education is only available in municipal units.

Enrol online

Guardians can enrol children online via the eVaka service at espoonvarhaiskasvatus.fi(external link, opens in a new window).

Log in using Suomi.fi authentication, which requires online banking credentials or Mobile ID. If you do not have a Finnish personal identity code or online banking credentials, you can use a printed application form. Fill in the paper form also if you have not yet been registered as the child’s official guardian in the Population Information System. The application form is available here.

Enrolment period

The enrolment period for the 2026–2027 school year is 8–20 January 2026.

Applications submitted after this period will only be processed after all applications received during the enrolment period have been handled.

Enrolment for private pre-primary education

If you wish to enrol your child in private pre-primary education, please note that some service providers may require a separate application in addition to the municipal form. Specific application instructions are available on the service providers’ websites.

Does your child need early childhood education connected to pre-primary education?

Pre-primary education is provided from 9.00 to 13.00. Many children require early childhood education outside these hours, either in the morning before or in the afternoon after pre-primary education. This additional service, called early childhood education connected to pre-primary education, is subject to a charge and is available during the opening hours of the pre-primary education provider.

You can apply for early childhood education connected to pre-primary education using the pre-primary education application form. For private pre-primary education, please check with the service provider for details on how to apply for the early childhood education connected to pre-primary education.

Existing early childhood education decisions end on 31 July 2026

Please note that existing decisions concerning your child’s early childhood education are valid only until 31 July 2026. If you need early childhood education for your child after this date and before the start of pre-primary education, you must submit a new application specifying the required dates.
