School transportation
Pupils may be granted a free public transportation travel card if they live a long way from school. Pupils with a shorter school commute may also be granted a travel card or transportation by taxi if the route to school is too difficult, tiring or dangerous in view of their age and other circumstances. If a pupil in basic education lives more than three or five kilometres away from his or her school, he or she is entitled to school transportation benefit.
Free transportation may also be granted if the commute is too difficult, tiring or dangerous in view of the pupil's circumstances, such as medical reasons.
A free public transportation travel card is granted to:
- pupils in grades 1–2 if their travel to school exceeds 3 km
- pupils in grades 3–9 if their travel to school exceeds 5 km
A travel card can also be issued for a shorter trip to school if the journey to school is found to be too difficult, strenuous or dangerous, considering the pupil's circumstances, such as health reasons.
You can apply for school transport for the pupil if he or she is unable to travel to school on foot, by bicycle or by using public transport. A statement is required for school transport, which must clearly state why the pupil cannot manage with the trip to school by walking, cycling or using public transport. The distance to school alone is not a criterion for granting school transport.
The school travel benefit can only be granted to a pupil attending a school designated by the City of Espoo. Pupils selected for secondary school or weighted education are not entitled to the school travel benefit.
