The way we report the main course’s carbon footprint on our menus has changed
Espoo Catering will continue to report the carbon footprint of the main courses on our menu pages, but the way it is reported will change. We will publish the CO2e, or carbon dioxide equivalent, figure for the main course in the meal information. We will no longer use the footprint icons.
You can view the carbon footprint on our menu pages by clicking the i button next to the main course in question. The carbon footprint is displayed directly below the name of the main course in the window that opens.
Since 19 January 2026, Espoo Catering Oy has displayed the carbon footprint of the lunch main course on school and day care centre menus. The change in the reporting method is based on the EU’s EmpCo Directive, which clarifies the rules on sustainability communications and sustainability labels.
The data we use in the calculation of the carbon footprint of food is based on the 2024 climate data of the Natural Resources Institute Finland, which covers the CO2e data of foodstuffs from primary production to the food service operator. Based on the data, we have defined the aforementioned indicative limit values for carbon footprint levels. For foods for which emission data is not available, we use existing data for similar foods.
Espoo Catering wants to promote transition towards a more sustainable lifestyle. The publication of food carbon footprint data supports the objectives of the City of Espoo’s Carbon Neutral Espoo 2030 roadmap.
