Kivimiehen koulu is a comprehensive school in Otaniemi, Eastern Espoo. The school will grow one grade at the time into a joint comprehensive school of circa 800 pupils from pre-primary education to the 6th grade. The school building is designed by Alvar Aalto and renovated for Kivimiehen koulu.
Our school
Kivimies International School operates in a building originally designed by Alvar Aalto. The premises have been fully renovated for school use.
In the school year 2025–2026, the school offers education for grades 1–6 in Finnish language basic education and in Weighted curriculum English education. Later on, if the service needs in the catchment area change, the school may be converted into a joint comprehensive school encompassing grades 1–9.
Pupils learn basic knowledge and skills at our school. The positive school atmosphere supports the development of children’s self-esteem. We teach children to have good manners, respect others and take responsibility for the environment. Our active parents’ association contributes to the supportive atmosphere.

Studying at our school
Curriculum
Teaching in our school is based on a curriculum. Our curriculum provides guidelines on the organisation of teaching and the methods of learning. The curriculum defines the objectives and contents of the subjects and the criteria for assessment. Municipal and school-specific curricula are drawn up on the basis of the national core curriculum. Link to the school’s curriculum (external link, opens in a new tab)(external link, opens in a new window) (in Finnish).
- Languages taught at the school
A1 language: English
A2 language: Spanish and French (classes taught in English), German (classes taught in Finnish)
- Assessment
The school complies with the assessment guidelines specified in Espoo’s curriculum. Click on this link to read about the assessment guidelines.
Assessment discussions are held in January–February for all grades. At the end of the school year, the pupils receive their end-of-school-year certificates. The certificate provides the pupil and their guardians with information on how the pupil has achieved the objectives set for the school year in the subjects they have studied.
- Absences
Pupils must ask for permission to be absent from school. If the absence lasts between 1 and 5 school days, ask the teacher for permission. If the absence exceeds 5 days, ask the principal for permission. If the pupil becomes ill, report the absence to the class teacher as soon as possible.
- School rules
The school rules encourage good behaviour and a respectful attitude towards others.

Anti-bullying support
We want our school to feel like a community, which we promote through team building and practising emotional and interaction skills. Our school has zero tolerance towards bullying, and it is the adults’ duty to intervene in bullying situations. We encourage pupils to tell someone if they are being bullied or see others being bullied. If you suspect that your child is being bullied or they are bullying someone, contact their teacher. Cooperation between the school and pupils’ homes is very important in solving bullying situations. If necessary, pupil welfare services and other authorities can also get involved.
School-specific plan for bullying prevention and intervention.
Pupil welfare services and support for learning
The school supports pupils’ wellbeing and learning. Support can be provided in a teaching group or on a pupil-by-pupil basis. Read more about the different types of support on the basic education website.
For more information on student support services, see the city's common website.

Wilma
The Wilma online service(external link, opens in a new window) is an important channel of communication between the school and pupils’ families. Through Wilma, you will receive messages and bulletins from your child’s school. The online service allows you to send messages and keep track of your child’s learning and absences.
Parents’ associations and class committees
By participating in the activities of parents’ associations and class committees, guardians can cooperate and get to know each other. With the help of guardians, schools have been able to organise various theme days, events, performances and community efforts. We encourage guardians to get involved and contribute to the development of the school’s operating culture.
The chairperson of the parents’ association of Kivimies International School is Sanna Kurronen, +358 50 589 8886.
School board
Espoo’s schools have either school-specific or shared school boards. The tasks of the board include supporting the school and ensuring good cooperation and a safe learning environment. The board approves, for example, the school curriculum and the school year plan. The board consists of pupils’ parents and representatives of school staff. In lower secondary schools and joint comprehensive schools, pupil representatives are also involved in board work. The board is elected for two years at a time. The board’s role and power of decision are described in more detail in the Administrative Regulations of the City of Espoo.
