Curriculum, subjects and assessment

Education and upbringing in school are based on the curriculum. It tells how teaching is arranged, what is studied and how. It defines the goals and contents of subjects, provides foundation for assessment and describes different ways of working.

Curriculum

The curriculum has three levels.

Subjects and distribution of lesson hours

Distribution of lesson hours defines how many hours per week each subject is studied.

Assessment of learning

The majority of assessment takes place in daily school-going in teacher-pupil interaction.

According to the national core curriculum, it covers learning, working and behaviour.

It is important that the assessment of learning is encouraging, realistic and follows goal-setting. Diverse and flexible, situationally applicable means are used. Pupil's needs and circumstances are accounted for. Both the pupil and the guardian must receive enough information about assessment.
