Municipal Services -study has been conducted since 1983. The study finds out the opinions of inhabitants of Espoo about the quality of municipal services and their own opinions about their welfare.

Health and welfare of adult population: The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) launched the Terve Suomi (Healthy Finland) study for the first time in 2022, replacing the previously conducted FinSote study. The Terve Suomi study targets individuals over the age of 20 and aims to assess aspects such as health, well-being, and the use of services. Nationwide results were published in 2023, and municipality-specific results were announced in spring 2024.

School Health Promotion Survey is conducted biyearly by THL. Information is collected from children attending the 8th and 9th grades of basic education, those studying in upper secondary schools and vocational schools, and children attending the 4th and 5th grades of basic education and their guardians.

Welfare report includes the most important information about inhabitants’ welfare and welfare goals by age groups for the next coming years.

Satisfaction with municipal services still at a reasonably good level

The Municipal Services Study in Espoo 2024 gives information about inhabitants’ satisfaction toward municipal services. Survey tells also about everyday problems and safety.

Survey from 2024 tells that the overall satisfaction with municipal services has stayed at a reasonably good level. The large satisfaction index is at the same level as year earlier and overall grade has even raised compared to 2023.

The survey was conducted – like year earlier - as an internet panel survey. Previously the study has been contacted as a mail survey.

The Terve Suomi study was initiated for the first time in 2022, and municipality-specific results from 2023 were announced in spring 2024.

The health and lifestyles of Espoo residents continue to be at the top level compared to other municipalities.

The rate of excessive alcohol consumption among working-age individuals in Espoo is significantly lower than the national average. Additionally, the proportion of smokers among working-age individuals is lower than the national average, as is the proportion of individuals who engage in insufficient physical activity. The trend of obesity has plateaued in Espoo, with the proportion of obese individuals among working-age people being lower than the national average. The percentage of individuals who perceive their health as average or poor is also lower than the national average.

The most concerning findings of the Terve Suomi survey for Espoo were the increasing number of individuals who feel lonely (now higher than the national average) and the growing proportion of individuals experiencing significant psychological distress reaching the national level.

Promoting the health and wellbeing of residents is one of the key tasks of a municipality. The different city sectors share this responsibility.

Health and wellbeing promotion means consciously influencing wellbeing and its underlying factors, such as living conditions and environments, lifestyles and life management skills, and the functioning and availability of services. It can be seen as an investment in preventing poverty, exclusion and other social problems.
