The playground of Tornitaso will be removed and the area will be landscaped as a greenery area

The Espoo Public Works Department will remove the Tornitaso playground during the summer of 2026. The playground does not meet the requirements for a safe playground and the playground equipment and facilities are in need of replacement. The Public Works Department has prepared a plan for removing the Tornitaso playground and landscaping the area. The project is based on Espoo's Playground Programme 2026–2036 and safety inspections carried out on the playground in autumn 2025.

The aim is to ensure that the city's playground network remains safe, high quality and serves different areas equally. Playgrounds will be removed in situations where the overall assessment shows that there is already a well-accessible and better-equipped playground in the surrounding area, and that maintenance resources can be allocated more efficiently.

The Tornitaso playground would require more extensive structural changes and repairs in order for the playground to meet current safety requirements. Construction and renovation measures would require abnormally extensive solutions and investments. However, since there are safe and high-quality playgrounds in the surrounding area, the Tornitaso playground will be removed. After the playground is removed, the area will be landscaped to become part of the surrounding park.

The Tornitaso playground is located in Tapiola at Tornitaso 4. The nearest replacement playground is the Oravametsä playground, which is approximately 260 metres away. The Oravametsä playground is fenced and designed to serve children of different ages. In addition, the Tuuliniitty playground and the Kaskenkaataja playground are located about a kilometer away. In addition, the new Metsola daycare center is located in the Länsikorkee residential area. The yard of which is available to everyone outside of operating hours.

We understand that the removal of the playground may raise concerns or resentment. However, the development of the playground network is being carried out in the long term so that all children in Espoo have the safest, highest quality and best-maintained play environments as possible also in the future.
