Espoo’s Playground Programme 2026–2036

ParksThe whole Espoo

The ten-year period of the current playground programme ends at the end of 2025. A new playground programme will be drawn up together with children, young people and adults, and it will provide guidelines for the construction and maintenance of playgrounds from 2026 to 2036. The process started with a survey for Espoo residents. The results have now been published on this page.

Espoo’s Playground Programme Promotes Play and Boosts Community Spirit

The aim of the playground programme is to ensure a network of high-quality playgrounds that serve the needs of various users. When developing its playgrounds, the city pays particular attention to safety, accessibility and the sufficiency of playgrounds. Accessible high-quality playgrounds promote equal opportunities for high-quality leisure activities, play and physical activity among children, young people and families in Espoo. They also promote encounters and boost community spirit, which supports residents’ wellbeing.

Playground Programme Covers 200 Playgrounds and Residents’ Parks

Based on the playground programme, the city determines where new playgrounds will be built and which playgrounds will be renovated or demolished over the next ten years. The playground programme covers about 200 playgrounds and residents’ parks maintained by the city. The programme does not cover playgrounds located in the yards of day care centres and schools.

It is important for the city to develop its playground network due to the changes in the urban structure and population growth. The programme does not specify the design of each playground. Residents always get to take part in the playground planning process.

Children, Young People and Adults Involved in Development Work

The playground programme is drawn up together with residents. The process started by collecting residents’ views through a survey.  The survey was open until 22nd of September 2024. We have now compiled a report on the survey responses and it can be found on this page under downloadable files.
