Keep the spirit of Espoo Day alive every day
Espoo Day shows that residents can make the city a vibrant, unique place that brings people together. We can embrace the spirit of Espoo Day all year round.
A strong sense of community makes for happier residents
The need to belong is one of the most basic human needs. The city offers plenty of opportunities for enjoying an independent lifestyle, but we do ourselves a disservice if we forget to nurture a sense of community. Feeling connected to your city, your neighbourhood and your neighbours creates a sense of security and meaning – feelings that can bring a smile to your face as you go through the ups and downs of everyday life.
A sense of community does not emerge by itself. Building and maintaining a community requires a conscious effort, just like any other relationship. There is little to lose in trying to create a sense of community. At worst, you might feel a little disappointed when you fail to get the whole neighbourhood involved in a community effort. But you will almost certainly make at least a few new acquaintances and have some positive experiences along the way. At best, your actions may set off a snowball effect, allowing you to enjoy the fruits of your efforts sooner than you might expect.
Espoo Day offers a taste of a ‘shared city’
Espoo Day is a celebration for all Espoo residents, held on the last weekend of August. On Espoo Day, the city comes alive with events, open doors, discussions, fun activities, and a wonderful atmosphere. The day is a chance to take a break from everyday routines and focus on enjoying Espoo and each other. It is also an opportunity to encourage people to meet others, do things together and invite people over.
While we want residents to celebrate and share their stories and passions especially on Espoo Day, these are things we hope to see and hear throughout the year, too!
On Espoo Day, the threshold for organising your own event or activity is especially low, as there is support available for planning and promotion. The aim is for this shared celebration to encourage as many people as possible to take that first step. But the journey does not have to end there. We hope the city reflects its residents’ interests, wildest ideas and warmest feelings all year round.
Many ways to build a sense of community
Take part in boosting community spirit on Espoo Day – and throughout the year. Here are some ways to get involved:
- Attend events. Get moving and experience something new that touches, inspires or surprises you. Espoo offers all kinds of fun things to do throughout the year, and simply showing up can help create the atmosphere and encourage the event organiser.
- Reach out. Raise a glass to the people at the next table, offer help to someone studying a map, or stop for a chat with a stranger. Respect everyone’s personal space and wishes but keep the door open to new encounters and small moments of connection. Set an example for anyone who feels nervous about being alone or joining in.
- Organise your own events. Invite others to enjoy the things that bring you joy, whether in everyday life or on special occasions. It could be anything from a large music festival to a clean-up event in your housing company’s yard, or from a group run announced on social media to a flea market set up in the front yard.
- Find joy in helping others. Join a community effort, volunteer or get involved in an organisation. Research shows that helping others is good for us.
