With an amendment to the detailed plan, a new use is being sought for the old, protected Kungsgårdsskolan school building in Kurttila. A new, larger day care centre and new commercial buildings along Kauklahdenväylä are also being planned for the plan area. In addition, the possibilities for constructing additional residential buildings along Kurtinmalmi and Fransmanninkuja are being explored.

The planning area around Kungsgårdsskolan school, located at the intersection of Kauklahdenväylä and Kurttilantie, is a culturally and historically significant area, the landmark of which is the old, protected Kungsgårdsskolan school building. The school building is currently not in use. The aim of the amendment to the detailed plan is to enable a new use for the school building so that the building will remain a functional part of the area. The city has already started an application process to find an operator for the building.

The Kurttila area is village-like, and construction in the area is on a small scale.
“Cultural and historical values guide the planning of both the school building and the environment in the entire area,” says Anselmi Moisander, the main coordinator of the plan and an architect at the Espoo City Planning Department.

Commercial and residential buildings in addition to the day care centre

A new, larger day care centre is needed in the area in addition to the current Swedish-speaking one. The new day care centre would be placed on two currently unbuilt plots along Kurttilantie.

In addition, commercial buildings or other complementary buildings are being planned for the school plot and the Joukkojenkenttä field next to the school building. New premises for business activities are also being planned further west along Kauklahdenväylä.

There is already a plan for residential and commercial buildings for the block area bordered by Fransmanninkuja, Kurtinmalmi and Kurttilantie in the southern part of the area.

“However, no buildings have been constructed in the area, and we are now looking at whether there is a need to update the plan,” Moisander says.

The planning will also investigate the possibility of adding a new street from Kurttilantie to Joukkojenkenttä via Rahamännynpuisto. As part of the planning, pedestrian and cycling routes will also be examined, in particular with the aim of making travel via them smoother. In addition, an ecological statement will be prepared, and the need for a more extensive ecological survey regarding the wildlife and the large trees in the area will be investigated.
