Enrolment in pre-primary education, first grade and lower secondary school begins on 8 January 2026

Enrolment for the 2026–2027 school year begins in January. Guardians must enroll their children born in 2020 in pre-primary education and children born in 2019 in the first grade of basic education. In addition, sixth-graders must be enrolled in lower secondary school. In Espoo, the autumn term for pre-primary education and basic education starts on Thursday, 13 August 2026.
Enrolment in pre-primary education between 8 and 20 January 2026
Enrolment in pre-primary education for the 2026–2027 school year takes place from 8 to 20 January 2026 by submitting an electronic application in the eVaka service at espoonvarhaiskasvatus.fi. You can log in to the service by identifying yourself through suomi.fi, which requires bank credentials or a mobile certificate.
Pre-primary education in Espoo for children born in 2020 begins on 13 August 2026. Pre-primary education is free of charge and is provided in day-care centres and schools Mon–Fri from 09:00 to 13:00.

Enrolment in the 1st grade of comprehensive school between 8 and 20 January 2026
Guardians must enrol their children born in 2019 in the first grade of comprehensive school. Enrolment will be open on Wilma (espoo.inschool.fi(external link, opens in a new window)) from 8 to 20 January 2026. The children whose school start has been postponed in the school year 2025–2026 shall be enrolled in the first grade on Wilma during the enrolment period.
All guardians of school newcomers in Espoo will receive a letter by post at the turn of the year. The letter will contain a key code to create personal Wilma credentials and the brochure “Welcome to school!”
The 2026–2027 school year begins on Thursday, 13 August 2026. If the child is able to study in both Finnish and Swedish, the guardians may choose which education to enrol the child in.

Enrolment in the 7th grade of comprehensive school between 8 and 15 January 2026
Finnish-language basic education
Enrolment in the seventh grade of basic education takes place in Wilma from 8 to 15 January 2026. Assistance with enrolment is available from the child’s current school. Guardians will receive a reminder of the application period from their child’s school in the form of a Wilma message.

Swedish-language basic education
The decision on the school to which Espoo sixth-graders will be placed for the seventh grade will be made and published in Wilma during February 2026. The decision can be found under the tab “Applications and decisions”. The future school will be determined based on the school where the pupil is attending sixth grade.

The application period for afternoon activities in Finnish-language basic education in Espoo is from 24 April to 10 May 2026. The afternoon activities are open for applications from pupils in the 1st and 2nd grades and for pupils requiring learning and school attendance support. Applications are made electronically on Wilma.

The application period for afternoon activities in Swedish-language basic education in Espoo is from 8 January to 30 April 2026. The afternoon activities are open for applications from pupils in the 1st and 2nd grades and pupils with a special support decision. Applications are made electronically on Wilma.
