School place decisions for new first-graders have been made
On 26 April 2023, the City of Espoo assigned local schools to 3098 first-graders.
Decisions are sent through Wilma or by post
Decisions on local schools and weighted-curriculum education are sent either electronically through Wilma or by post, depending on which option was selected on the application form. Special support decisions are sent to guardians by post.
You can view the electronic decision sent through Wilma by using a web browser but not by using the Wilma application on a mobile device. The electronic decision sent through Wilma will not be sent by post.
The decision will be posted to the guardians who have chosen to receive the decision in paper form, and it will arrive in week 18. The decision will also be posted if enrolment in first grade was carried out after the application period had ended. The paper decision will not be sent through Wilma, and you cannot inquire about its content by telephone.
You do not need to formally accept the place in the local school. The local school decision will remain in force while the pupil is attending the grades available at the school. The decision on weighted-curriculum education will be in force for the grades indicated in the decision.
You can contact the principal who made the decision if you wish to further discuss the criteria used for your child’s local school decision. If you are not satisfied with the decision, you can submit an appeal against the decision to the Regional State Administrative Agency for Southern Finland within 14 days of receiving the decision. The date of service is recorded in the decision. Appeal instructions are sent together with the decision.
Pupils may be admitted to a secondary school (i.e. a school that is not the local school assigned by the municipality) based on a guardian’s application if there are places left. You can find the application instructions, schedule and admission criteria on this page.
Decisions for pupils needing special support are made for each pupil catchment area based on uniform criteria. Special needs education is provided in local and city-level groups. Local schools were assigned in the above-mentioned manner to those pupils for whom special support is provided in a group within mainstream education or in a school-specific special needs education group or as a flexible combination of these two methods. You may get the special support decision after the local school decision. For more information, you can contact the principal of the school in question.
Application periods for school transportation benefit and afternoon activities
You can apply for school transportation benefit until 10 May. Information on the school place will be taken into account in the processing of the school transportation benefit application.
The application period for afternoon activities for first- and second-graders starts on 26 April and ends on 10 May 2023. The decisions on places in afternoon activities will be sent to guardians through Wilma or by post, depending on which option was selected on the application form. You do not need to have information on the child’s school place when you apply for afternoon activities, as the activities will take place at the child’s school.
