Espoo’s Building Control Department grants the most building permits for detached houses in Finland

In the 2020s, Espoo’s Building Control Department has granted a substantially higher number of building permits for detached and semi-detached houses than any other municipality in Finland.
Espoo’s Building Control Department has granted a large number of building permits for detached and semi-detached houses in the 2020s. According to Statistics Finland’s data, approximately 780 permits were granted during the 12 months before June 2022. This number is significant as the figure for Vantaa, the municipality granting the second highest number of permits, was 457.
Espoo is in a class of its own as the number of permit decisions for detached houses and the difference between Espoo and other cities have also clearly increased during the past two and a half years.
Furthermore, Espoo’s Building Control Department grants the highest number of permits for new construction in the capital region. “Espoo’s growth is also reflected in the fact that our Building Control Department has granted the most floor area per resident over the past several years,” says Pasi Timo, Director of the Environment and Building Control Department.
”Detached houses are, in particular, being built in the Kurttila and Saunaniemi areas and in Perusmäki, while apartment buildings are mainly built along rail transport routes,” says Housing Manager Anne Savolainen.
Between January and September, the construction of 3,016 homes started and 3,900 homes were completed in Espoo. Tapiola, Niittykumpu, Finnoo, Suurpelto, Perkkaa and Nihtisilta have been the busiest construction areas.
