Espoo has joined forces with Mannheim (Germany) and Umeå (Sweden) within the framework of a new EU-funded ALLIANCE project (Alliance for Local green deaLs and Innovative Action for resilieNt Cities and Enterprises).

The project is coordinated by the international ICLEI organisation that promotes sustainable development on a local level. The project aims to build local sustainable development efforts and strengthen their impacts. The purpose is to bring together and bolster the efforts of cities towards sustainable development. The project aims to promote the Local Green Deal initiative that brings the EU Green Deal programme to the local level in order to ensure that sustainable development efforts are mobilised throughout Europe. In Espoo, local sustainable development work is being conducted through the City’s gross-administrative sustainable development programme.

Cities do not have enough opportunities to systematically share experiences related to sustainable development work. The Alliance project addresses this issue by enabling the sharing of good practices, challenges and lessons learned among cities and local partners. In addition to this, other European cities and other operators in the social economy will join the efforts to learn from the experiences for future benefit. Information exchange days intended for sharing experiences will be held in all three cities. Early next year, Espoo will be welcoming all parties involved in the project to further develop jointly discovered sustainable development solutions and plot a course for the future.

The Alliance project will end in the spring of 2024. The results will be used to prepare operational recommendations for European decision-makers as well as a guidebook on good practices that other cities can use.
