The SPARCS project of the City of Espoo’s Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development is organising a road test event on the theme of sustainable mobility in Espoonlahti as part of the week celebrating Espoo’s 50th anniversary as a city.

Open to all and free of charge, the Sustainable Mobility Road Test event will be held on Friday 26 August from 16:00 to 20:00 in Espoonlahti, at the Solmutori square of the new urban center Lippulaiva.

At the event, residents will have the opportunity to try out TIER’s e-scooters and Helkama Velox’s electric bicycles, for example, and learn about a sustainable lifestyle with Schneider Electric, HSL and the City of Espoo. There will also be an opportunity to see an electric car and learn about how it is charged. Visitors can also bring their bikes to be serviced at Yeply’s mobile bike service point.

Mobility and transport cause about one third of emissions in Espoo. This means that sustainable mobility methods must continuously be reviewed and developed further to reduce the climate emissions they cause. The City of Espoo is working together with and acting as a lighthouse city in the EU-funded SPARCS project, which aims to develop and demonstrate new solutions of sustainable mobility and energy. Espoo is a test environment for developing the solutions, and the best discoveries can then be spread further.

“A transition towards greener mobility is an important part of a functional, comfortable and sustainable city, and of achieving Espoo’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2030. Combined with walking, cycling and public transport, various electronic modes of transport and shared mobility services facilitate this transition,” says Jani Tartia, Mobility Specialist at the City of Espoo’s Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development.

The Sustainable Mobility Road Test event is organised as part of the SPARCS project, which focuses on promoting a sustainable lifestyle, energy-positive areas and the engagement of residents. Residents’ interest in sustainable and low-carbon mobility, walking and cycling, and sustainable development events was revealed by a survey conducted in autumn 2021, which examined residents’ views on sustainable development work in Espoo and their own willingness to participate and influence.

So grab your bicycle helmet and come to Solmutori on Friday 26 August at 16:00 to get inspired by more sustainable mobility!
