Fifty years ago, Espoo was declared a city. To mark the occasion, the traditional Espoo Day will be preceded by an entire week of festivities. During the Espoo Celebrates! week, we will treat our young residents to a special lunch at day care centres, comprehensive schools and general upper secondary schools on Wednesday 24 August 2022.

Espoo has a long and fascinating history. The oldest written reference to a place called Espoo dates back to the 1400s, and later in the same century, Espoo became an independent civil and church parish. Espoo became a market town in 1963 and a city in 1972.

If they so wish, children and young people may dress festively or in another way that pleases them for the celebratory lunch. If possible, units may also acknowledge the special week in other ways, such as talking to children and young people about their hometown.
