Lawns turning into meadows all around the city

The City of Espoo will be turning lawn areas into meadows at five locations during summer 2022. The aim is to increase the biodiversity of local nature and the range of plant and animal species.
The selected locations have lawns that have not seen much use, that have grown poorly in unfavourable conditions or that have a good chance of developing into meadows.
The soon-to-be meadows are located in Aspelininpuisto, Matinniitty, Träskända by the side of Järvenperäntie and Vanttila on the slope at Vanhan Nissintie-Kaupunginpuutarha. The City has already put up signs at the locations that explain why the management of the lawns is being reduced so that they can develop into meadows. Meadows are most commonly managed by mowing and mulching 1–2 times per growth season.
The City’s green areas are important for both residents and local ecosystems. These green areas include meadows, which Espoo manages with the aim of strengthening their natural characteristics. These management efforts also enable the meadows to be used for a wide range of recreational activities by the city’s growing population.
