Our Espoo 20X0 is an extensive series of events in which residents, decision-makers and experts plan and build the future of Espoo together. The series includes 14 events taking place between January and May. The events are mainly held in Finnish.

The themed evenings will delve into the changes in Espoo from different perspectives. The discussion events will allow residents to have their say on the future of their neighbourhoods. These events will be organised for the areas of Tapiola, Central Espoo, Matinkylä, Espoonlahti, Northern Espoo, Kauklahti and Leppävaara. There will also be two discussions on Espoo as a whole and one workshop.

“Residents and politicians are often asking for a broader discussion about where, how much and in what form they want to build Espoo, or what they want to keep. It is important to reflect together on how the city can grow in a sustainable way, taking into account the different residents and characteristics of the areas,” says Torsti Hokkanen, Director of Urban Planning in Espoo.

The opening event of the series will be headlined by renowned futurist . At the themed evening on 18 January, entitled Winds of Change, she will explain how global megatrends will affect Espoo. Hiltunen will examine the changes, both as a futurologist and as a resident of Espoo:

“We live in a more international and fragmented world, where cultures and ways of working are mixing. On the other hand, the value of local aspects may increase: Perhaps the Espoo of the future will be a city made up of distinctive neighbourhoods, like small villages. Their communities will be strengthened through virtual tools, village centres and strong communal activities, for example.”

The February themed evening will delve into resident-oriented urban planning with Marketta Kyttä. In March, Eeva Furman will lead a discussion on the relationship between nature and people, and in April, Juha Kostiainen will introduce us to the everyday life and housing of the future.

Our Espoo 20X0 is jointly organised by Espoo Adult Education Centre, Espoo’s Urban Planning Department and Espoo’s Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development.

“Changes challenge us all to take part in lifelong and continuous learning. Tens of thousands of Espoo residents attend courses at Espoo Adult Education Centre every year. The Our Espoo 20X0 events are good forums for all local residents to participate in planning the desired future of their home city,” says Anna-Maija Iskanius, Branch Director at Omnia.

The input from the Our Espoo 20X0 events will be used later in city planning, improving the participation of residents and developing the range of education offered by Espoo Adult Education Centre.

The events are mainly held in Finnish!
