Garden waste, such as twigs and leaves, can be composted on your own property in an open compost or enclosed food composter. Small quantities can be taken to Sortti Stations, and larger quantities, such as pallet loads, to the Ämmässuo Waste Treatment Centre. Reception is subject to a charge.

The dumping of leaves, branches and other garden waste in public forests, parks, green spaces, streets and water areas is prohibited. This also prevents the spreading of invasive species.

Apples, berries or other foodstuffs must not be composted in an open compost or otherwise heaped to decompose. Food waste must be composted in a sealed composter protected from pests. Alternatively, surplus apples or berries can be delivered for waste treatment as biowaste or mixed waste.

Biowaste fermented with a Bokashi composter should be further composted in a food composter. Bokashi residue must not be composted in an open compost. Biowaste fermented with Bokashi and only partially degraded by yeasts, etc., may cause an odour nuisance in an open compost, attract pests and serve as a source of food for them.
