Master plans govern land use planning in Espoo

Ongoing Espoo Master Plan 2060 looks at future land use.

The master plan is a general plan of land use designed by the municipality. The community structure, land use and different functions of a municipality or its part are determined in a master plan. A master plan governs town planning and building permissions outside town plan areas. A master plan can be designed for the entire municipality or smaller areas within, and it can also be designed in stages. A master plan may or may not be legally binding.

In Espoo, legally binding master plans cover almost the entire city. Master plans have been designed for different purposes at different times. The municipality is responsible for designing and updating master plans.

The City of Espoo has begun working on Espoo Master Plan 2060 which covers the entire city. The new master plan looks at the entire city’s future development. Areas where the current master plan of Espoo’s southern parts is out of date are being focused on in particular.
