Digital official mail
In April 2026, public authorities in Finland started sending official mail primarily digitally. This means that official mail, such as decisions, notifications and invitations, will primarily be delivered electronically via Suomi.fi Messages to everyone who uses electronic services and logs in using Suomi.fi e-identification.
How the transition will proceed?

You will be prompted to activate Suomi.fi Messages when you log in to public authorities’ electronic services.
During 2026
A Suomi.fi Messages mailbox is automatically created for all citizens who use electronic services. When logging in to a public authority’s digital service, the person is asked to activate the Suomi.fi Messages service. Creating a digital mailbox always requires strong identification, and the service will not be activated automatically in the background or without the person’s knowledge.
From then on, official mail from various authorities will be delivered to this mailbox. Suomi.fi Messages will replace paper mail from authorities. However, paper mail will remain available as an alternative for those who cannot or do not wish to use digital services.
Official mail from the City of Espoo will also primarily be delivered digitally to residents who use electronic services. Throughout 2026, the city will gradually shift its official communication to Suomi.fi Messages. However, not all systems are ready for the change, but the overall digitalisation process is steadily progressing.
The goal is to also enable citizens to read official messages through private digital mail services as soon as technical solutions allow.
