Pupils who do not speak Finnish begin school in a preparatory education group. There are preparatory education groups in several schools. If the pupil speaks some Finnish and needs support in strengthening their Finnish skills, they can receive preparatory education in one's own class at the local school.

Preparatory education is available in pre-primary education or in basic education at school. The language of preparatory education is Finnish. Enrolment in preparatory education takes place by contacting the Multicultural Education Services of the Espoo Finnish Education Unit.

Inclusive and group-form preparatory education

Preparatory education is organised as inclusive preparatory education (IVAL) or as group-form preparatory education (RVAL). The form of the preparatory education is decided according to the pupil's  Finnish language skills.

In basic education, preparatory education lasts for approximately one year. After preparatory education, the pupil moves on to comprehensive education in which they will receive intensified support for studying when necessary.
