Preparatory education

Instruction preparing for basic education is intended for pupils who do not yet have sufficient Finnish language skills to attend basic education. Pupils attending preparatory education study Finnish and the skills needed in basic education. They also learn about Finnish culture and society.

The language of instruction is Finnish. Preparatory education has its own curriculum, and a personal study plan is drawn up for each pupil. The study plan includes the pupil’s goals and the subjects they will be studying.

Preparatory education is available during pre-primary education and at schools, also at Swedish-speaking schools.

Espoo offers preparatory education either at the pupil’s local school or in an area-specific preparatory education group. The form of education depends on the pupil’s grade level and local school. Pupils can start attending preparatory education at any time during the school year.

Preparatory education lasts about a year. After preparatory education, the pupils continue their studies in Finnish at their local schools. During basic education, pupils are given the support they need.

During and after preparatory education, pupils’ Finnish language studies are at first based on the syllabus for Finnish as a second language and literature (S2). Pupils follow the S2 curriculum, which has a lot in common with the Finnish language and literature studies. The number of Finnish lessons varies depending on the grade.
