Ukrainian children and young people living in Espoo miss their hobbies. Art instructor Sofiia Yakovyshyna organises music sessions that allow them to sing songs in their own language.

For Sofiia Yakovyshyna, who now lives in Leppävaara, the past year has been far from normal. After Russia attacked Ukraine in February 2022, Sofiia fled the war from the city of Vinnytsia in central Ukraine to Espoo. She had been working as a music teacher for the past few years, and suddenly her life was turned upside down.

In Finland, she found a job as a cleaner and began to learn the Finnish language. In her free time, she ran music clubs on a voluntary basis for other refugees from Ukraine. She was missing music very much as it has always been a part of her life.

“I noticed that the City of Espoo was looking for art instructors and decided to apply. I found out that they had already selected two instructors, but they liked the idea that I could work with children and young people who have fled the war in Ukraine,” Sofiia says.

An important cause

At the time of the interview, Sofiia has been working as an art instructor for one month. Her work includes assessing the recreational needs of Ukrainian children and young people in Espoo, helping them find hobbies and organising music sessions. Sofiia is not familiar with the Finnish language, which has not made her work easier.

“I know some simple phrases in Finnish, but otherwise I speak English at work. I have not worked in English before so at first I was nervous about that too.”

Sofiia says that her work feels very rewarding.

“It is important that we reach Ukrainian children and young people. Many of them had to quit their hobbies because of the war, and it is not easy to take part in music or art activities if you do not know the language. A sports club is easier to join,” Sofiia points out.

Free low-threshold activities

The activities provided by the city’s art instructors are part of the Espoo Hobby Path, which offers free recreational activities for children and young people in connection with school days at or near their own school. Sofiia’s music sessions are also usually held on school premises.

“This is an entirely voluntary after-school activity, but I think many children and young people need it. We want our groups to be small so that we can offer individual instruction,” Sofiia says.

She believes that the activities are also important to children in terms of fostering a sense of community.

“It is nice to give them an opportunity to sing in their native language,” Sofiia says.

Sofiia’s job includes keeping in touch and networking with schools that have Ukrainian pupils as well as with Ukrainian organisations that work with children. She is also involved in a project that aims at bringing culture and art to Ukrainian families, for example in reception centres.
