Principles for safer spaces in economic development and employment services

The principles for safer spaces are guidelines that help us make our events, services, and spaces as safe and pleasant as possible for everyone.

We want everyone to feel welcome and safe, which is why we adhere to these principles. While it may not always be possible to achieve a completely safe space for everyone, we do our best to work towards that goal.

Principles for safer spaces

The principles for safer spaces apply to all customers, visitors, employees, and performers who are present at the premises and events of the City of Espoo’s economic development and employment services.

I take others into consideration

  • I behave in a way that does not intentionally offend anyone.
  • I respect others in a conversation.
  • If someone needs help, I will help them.
  • I also ask for help when I need it.
  • I listen when someone speaks to me.
  • I understand that we all have different language skills and levels of knowledge. I speak clearly, support others’ learning, and do not make fun of others’ mistakes.
  • I allow myself and others to enjoy the event or activity in their own way. I respect everyone’s right to take breaks, leave, or choose not to participate in certain activities.

I show equal respect to everyone

  • I know we are all different. That is why I let everyone be themselves.
  • I understand that my assumptions are not the whole truth about a person. I do not make assumptions about anyone based on their disability, age, gender, sexual orientation, language, religion, or other characteristics.
  • When I speak, I use words that take everyone into account. I respect people’s chosen pronouns and names. I do not swear or use words someone might find offensive.

I do not harass or discriminate against others

  • I recognise that my actions can negatively affect others, even if my intentions are good.
  • I do not speak or behave in a way that discriminates against or degrades others. For example, I do not speak or act in a racist way or discriminate against different genders or sexual orientations.
  • I respect everyone’s bodily autonomy and their right to personal space. I do not comment on another person’s body, eating habits, portion sizes, or style of dress.
  • I do not intentionally disturb anyone with my behaviour. For example, I do not touch, stare, point a finger at or threaten others or invade their personal space.

I will intervene in harassment and discrimination

  • I will tell a member of staff if I am worried about something at the location or event. For example, if I notice that someone does not feel safe.
  • If I witness harassment, I will intervene and ask the harassed person if they want help or support. I will not remain a bystander.

The principles were developed in collaboration with Ekvalita, the clients of Espoo’s employment and economic services, and employees during 2024.
