Studying in general upper secondary school
Curriculum and distribution of lesson hours
Welcome to the renewed general upper secondary school!
General upper secondary education has undergone and will continue to undergo a number of significant developments in the early 2020s: a new curriculum was adopted in autumn 2021, and the new Act on Compulsory Education(extrernal link) entered into effect in spring of the same year. In addition, the matriculation examination will be renewed as of spring 2022. By the time that you start your general upper secondary education, these new developments will already be business as usual, and you will be introduced to the practices of general upper secondary school in the 2020s from day one!
The aims of general upper secondary education are to promote the wellbeing of students and student orientation, strengthen the quality of studies and learning outcomes and streamline the transition from upper secondary education to tertiary education. You will be introduced to university or university of applied sciences studies during general upper secondary school and continue to receive study guidance even after general upper secondary school. Your studies and the equipment needed for them at general upper secondary school are free of charge. If you encounter any problems regarding your study progress, support and help is at hand.
Curriculum for general upper secondary education
The National Board of Education prepares the national core curriculum for general upper secondary education. The core curriculum is an ordinance, which obligates the education provider to include the central goals and contents of instruction into the municipal or school-specific curriculum.
The curriculum of Espoo general upper secondary education(extrernal link), year 2016 (in Finnish) came into effect on August 1st 2016 with students beginning their first upper secondary grade, and will be introduced one grade at a time.
Distribution of lesson hours in general upper secondary education
The new national goals and distribution on lesson hours in general upper secondary education (ie. how the decreed total number of lesson hours is divided between different subjects, subject groups and guidance councelling) will be decided by a decree of the Finnish government.

Upper secondary studies consist of study units. The study units usually cover 1–3 credits and can include studies in one or more subjects. The upper secondary school year is divided into five periods, each of which lasts about 7.5 weeks.
The syllabus includes a minimum of 150 credits, of which 94 or 102 are compulsory for all students – depending on whether you choose basic or advanced mathematics.
The studies include a minimum of 20 credits of national optional studies. The studies can also include local optional studies and diverse thematic studies, such as the Towards general upper secondary studies and Sustainable future study units.

Liikefysiikkaa Pythonilla (1 op)
Aika: 4.10.2021 - 29.11.2021 maanantaisin klo 14.45-16.35
Kurssilla opit tutkimaan Newtonin lakien mukaista liikkeen etenemistä tietokonelaskennan menetelmien avulla erilaisissa esimerkkitilanteissa.
