Forest management
Forest areas are divided into sapling stands, young, mature and old forests based on the age structure of the trees. In Espoo, there are proportionally more older forests than young forests or sapling stands. Tree felling aiming for forest regeneration is done to ensure that there will be old forests in the future as well.
The goal of forest management in Espoo is to protect the biodiversity of forests and enable their diverse recreational use for the growing population. Espoo’s map service(external link, opens in a new window) includes the annual forest work programmes that are based on the nature and landscape management plans for different areas.
Espoo’s policy on the management of forests and meadows provides guidelines on the goals of the management of forests and meadows in Espoo and how management measures are implemented.
Residents and other stakeholders are consulted when preparing nature and landscape management plans. The Public Works Department’s customer service regularly receives feedback from residents regarding management needs, such as trees that are in poor condition.

Welcome to the forest trail!
You can learn about the City of Espoo’s forest management practices by taking a walk on the forest trail that traverses Keskuspuisto II, i.e. the western half of the city’s central park. The trail runs alongside the pedestrian route. You can find the forest trail through Espoo’s map service(external link, opens in a new window) by selecting Outdoor recreation > Forest trail (Metsäpolku). The trail includes twelve stops. Each stop features a forest-related question or a task that offers a peek into urban forest management.
Enjoy your forest excursion!
