Street types

Espoonlahdenkatu is a commercial- and apartment building area which accommodates a regional collecting street and a quality path for cycling. The street connects with Espoonlahdenranta from its northwester end and with Espoonlahdentie from southeast, Espoonlahdenkatu is an important street for public transport; pedestrian connections go through the new Lippulaiva building to Espoolahti’s subway station. Additionally, a new bus terminal for subway traffic and two customer parking lots for Lippulaiva’s customers and slopes for the subway’s park & drive traffic will be built along Espoonlahdenkatu.

Maakravunkuja, Solmukuja and Merikarhunkuja are plot streets that end in apartment building areas. Merikarhunkuja will serve subway escort traffic in the future.

Espoonlahdentori and Solmutori are street squares used for light traffic. Both have a subway entrance. There is a pedestrian connection (Kipparinreitti) though Lippulaiva’s property from Espoonlahdentori to Espoonlahdenkatu.

Espoonlahdenreitti is an important light traffic connection between Espoonlahdentori and Solmutori. Maintenance traffic is allowed at the start of the street (from Merikarhunkuja).

The whole planning area is a special level of accessibility.

Cross-sections

Espoonlahdenkatu is per se a 2 driveway and 2 lane and it has a light traffic lane on both sides which is a 4,00 metres wide combined sidewalk and cycle path.

Maakravunkuja is a three-lane driveway. Northwest of the driveway there is a combined sidewalk and cycle path which is 3,5 metres wide and a 3,00-metre sidewalk on the southeast side

Solmukuja is a three-lane driveway. Northwest of the driveway there is a combined sidewalk and cycle path which is 3,00 metres wide.

Merikarhunkuja is a 6,00-metre-wide driveway. Northwest of the driveway there is a combined sidewalk and cycle path which is 3,50 metres wide.

Espoonlahdenreitti’s northwest end, maintenance traffic is allowed. On this part the driveway is 3,50 metres wide. Parallel to the driveway there is a combined sidewalk and cycle path which is 3,50 metres wide. On Espoonlahdenreitti’s centre- and south parts the driveway’s width varies between c. 4 - 15 metres.

Effect on cityscape

As Espoonlahdenkatu, Espoonlahdenreitti and other new streets, walkways and market squares connected to them finish they will form city spaces and paths that are more structured then before. Our goal is to preserve the maritime atmosphere that the area is known for by using elements already used in building.

Vegetation, surface materials and furnishing

We strive to protect the distinctive look of the area’s street-, driveway and park areas and existing terrain, rock surface and vegetation (especially in park areas) by only executing reconstruction work that is necessary.

Espoonlahdenkatu and block streets connected to it and Merikarhunkuja’s driveways, sidewalks and cycle paths are primarily asphalt. Top layers of driveways, sidewalks, and cycle paths in Espoonlahdenkatu, block streets connected to it, and Marikarhunkuja are asphalt. Bushes will be planted on central reservations, on Espoonlahdenkatu, wider parts of central reservations are covered with stone and cycle parking and trees are placed where possible (load-bearing substrate). Grass is put on central reservations in less central locations. Bus stops, Espoonlahdenreitti and market squares connected to it have a concrete surface. Edge supports, walls, stairs and Espoonlahdenkatu’s driveway in front of Ulappatori and the section of Espoonlahdenreitti that is allowed for maintenance traffic are natural stone. Colours of surface materials vary from different shades of grey to almost black to a very light grey.

Furniture and equipment are high-quality pre-assembled furniture. All public areas are illuminated, and light poles are painted.

Drying and water maintenance

Runoff water is directed into three directions from the planning area, from Espoonlahdenkatu through Ulappakatu towards Amiraalimäki area, through Solukuja towards Espoonlahdentie and west through Merikarhunkuja.

Street structures

Structure layers of streets and walkways are designed according to the city of Espoo’s street superstructure sizing instructions. Noise barriers are not necessary.
