Street and park plans for Tapiola Sports Park
Streets and trafficTapiolaAs a result of the Tapiola Sports Park renovation project, the Espoo Public Works Department is preparing street and park plans. Planning the park and sports facilities in the northern part of the area and the streets to be connected to the area's traffic arrangements is underway. The planning aims to develop the sports park into a comfortable area that can be easily accessed through different modes of transport. The Technical Services Committee approved the plans on 28 February 2024.

Construction
Description of the construction project
The contract covers the construction of public areas in the northern part of the Tapiola sports park. The project includes the construction of streets, water supply and sewer systems, a parking area, a park, and sports and playground facilities. In addition, it involves renovating the existing Koivu-Mankkaan tie and building the new streets Yhteispelintie, Yhteispelinkuja and the connected public parking area, as well as Syöttäjänkuja. Other planned works comprise the Urheilupuistonaukio square, a new turning area on Tuohimäki street, the Tuohipuisto park, and neighbourhood sports and play areas and small playing fields within the park and recreational area.
Attention will also be paid to the emission values of the natural stone materials used in the project.
Excavators will operate using a digital excavation model that optimises the depth and width of the excavation to be made. This will, in turn, decrease the amount of soil removed and the amount of crushed stone to be brought in to replace the soil. The purpose of these measures is to reduce the construction time and minimise inconvenience to road users.
Carbon dioxide emissions will also be reduced by using renewable, fossil-free fuels in earth-moving machinery and earth-hauling trucks.
Basic information about the project
Schedule: October 2025–October 2027
Project supervisor: Tieluiska Oy
City developer’s representative: Jorma Kohonen
Description of the planning project
Koivu-Mankkaantie will be improved by, for example, building two new roundabouts to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the sports park area. The pedestrian and bicycle lane on the eastern edge of Koivu-Mankkaantie will be improved so that it becomes a separate road. The pedestrian and bicycle traffic connections leading from different directions to the sports park area are planned to support a smooth flow of traffic.
The new street Yhteispelintie to be built in the sports park will serve as a route for the drop-off and pick-up, rescue and maintenance traffic in the area. Through Yhteispelintie, there will also be a car access to the parking facility of the football stadium to be implemented in a separate project. In addition, there will be parking spaces located along Yhteispelintie. Yhteispelinkuja is a new street to be connected to Yhteispelintie, and through it, there will be a car access to the general parking area (LP) located between the Tapiola Sports Hall and Honkahalli. Kulmalipunkuja and Syöttäjänkuja are new access roads that will serve the new blocks of flats (AK). They will be connected to Yhteispelintie. A new turning space will be planned at the end of the current Tuohimäki street.
North of Yhteispelintie, three new football fields are being planned. The two westernmost fields will be kept snow-free. Between the two easternmost football fields, there will be a pleasant local exercise area with a running track, outdoor sports equipment, an exercise-oriented playground and a children’s street basketball court. East of the football fields, there will be a multi-purpose field suitable for activities such as floorball, two beach volleyball courts and an area suitable for skateboarding. North of Honkahalli, there will be two basketball courts.
The southern part of the planning area will be developed into a comfortable, high-quality square for leisure activities and it will also have the capacity to accommodate public events. The square will have multi-species planting areas (which can be utilised in stormwater treatment), shading trees and furniture that makes spending time in the square more comfortable. Bicycle parking spaces will be placed on the edges of the square. The surfaces will be partly paved.
The northern part of the planning area is a park. New paths surfaced with crushed stone fines will be built in Tuohipuisto and the existing routes will be improved. In the park area, delaying structures required by stormwater management will be implemented and trees will be planted to support the flying squirrel connection. Benches will be placed along the paths, and the western part of the park will have an area for outdoor exercise equipment that will take elderly users into account. The park will have a grass area suitable for playing and hanging out. In other respects, the park area will continue to be a meadow.
Draft plans for the streets and park will be publicly presented on Wednesday 20 September 2023 from 17:00 to 19:00 in the City of Espoo’s premises in Otaniemi at Tekniikantie 15, 02150 Espoo. The draft plans for the streets and park can be commented on in the Otakantaa.fi service from 20 September to 5 October: https://www.otakantaa.fi/fi/hankkeet/929/(external link, opens in a new window)
After the draft phase, the finalised street plan proposal will be presented publicly from 15 January to 29 January 2024. The parties concerned will be notified by letter of the presentation in public.
The construction for the project is expected to start in stages in 2024–2025.
