Design
Pleasant, high-quality squares will be developed in the southern part of the Tapiola sports park, serving the daily use of the area as well as more extensive recreational and event activities. The plan is naturally linked to the northern part of the sports park, together forming a functional whole. The planned street arrangements, public parking areas and squares will support smooth mobility and passage through the area. Key aspects considered during the planning process include accessibility, traffic safety, and the development of pedestrian and cycling routes. In addition, the plan takes into account the cityscape, recreational use, stormwater management, maintenance, and different modes of transport.
Urheilupuistonaukio and Lippuaukio will form the urban and functional centre of the area. The squares will feature a wide range of outdoor sports facilities, such as an artificial ice rink, a skate park and a basketball court, as well as pleasant areas for spending time. Trees, plants and seating groups will be added to structure the spaces, enhancing the comfort and clarity of the environment. The lighting planned for the squares will support safe and pleasant use of the area, structure the square area and improve the overall comfort and atmosphere. The multifunctional and flexible squares will also be suitable for hosting events of various sizes and allow for the placement of temporary event structures and sales kiosks.
The existing Palloilutie street on the southern side of the squares will be widened to provide a route for drop-off and pick-up traffic as well as emergency and maintenance vehicles. Parking spaces will be placed along the street, and it will also provide vehicle access to Metro Areena, Jousenkaaren koulu, and two public parking areas. In addition, a main cycling route will run along Palloilutie.
The draft plans will be published on 4 may and they will be available for comments on the Otakantaa.fi website from 5 to 19 May 2026. (https://www.otakantaa.fi/fi/hankkeet/1246/)
After the draft phase, the finalised street plan proposals will be made available for public review during autumn 2026. The interested parties will be informed of the public review period separately by post.
Construction of the street and squares is expected to start in autumn 2027.
