Park plan for Paul Olsson’s park and Thurman’s park

ParksLeppävaara

Espoo’s Public Works Department has started the preparation of a park plan for the north-eastern part of Paul Olsson’s park and the south-western part of Thurman’s park in cooperation with the City of Kauniainen. Planning of the Skvatterbäcken flood area suspended: The planning of the Skvatterbäcken flood area in Thurmaninpuisto (Kauniainen) and Paul Olssonin puisto (Espoo) has been suspended. The Skvatterbäcken stream is located southwest of the centre of Kauniainen.

Location

Ymmersta, Espoo

Phase

Design

The planning of the flood area was initially started to mitigate the impacts of flooding. In the plan, stormwater would have been directed to a low-lying flood area to be built in Paul Olssonin puisto and Thurmaninpuisto, which would have reduced the risk of harmful flooding in the parks and eased the load on the local stormwater sewer network. However, as the planning progressed, the ground conditions in the area proved to be very challenging. The earthworks required for the planned flood area would have demanded extensive ground reinforcement, which would increase the construction costs of the project by up to five times, significantly exceeding the estimated budget. Due to the high costs, the planning of the flood area has been suspended.

A draft park plan was presented at a field meeting held on Thursday 8 August 2024.

The draft park plan was available for comments on the Otakantaa.fi website from 8 to 22 August 2024. Address: www.otakantaa.fi/fi/hankkeet/1045/(external link, opens in a new window)

The planning suspension does not apply to the new pedestrian and bicycle path that starts from Ersintie and connects to the existing path in Thurmaninpuisto, north of Skvatterbäcken. The City of Kauniainen is responsible for the planning and construction of the path.
