Park plan for the Finnoviken area
ParksEspoonlahtiMatinkyläA park plan is being prepared for the Finnoviken area. The goal of the plan is to preserve the area’s natural values as the city grows and the recreational use of the area increases. The area will be developed with a nature-oriented approach, balancing the needs of local birdlife and other users. The plan is based on the detailed plan for the Finnoo centre and the management and use plan drawn up for Finnoo’s valuable bird habitat.
Phase
Design
The measures outlined in the park plan will focus on the areas near the Finnoo centre. Entrances and trails will feature rest areas and information boards highlighting the area’s natural values and principles of use. The nature trail around the basin will be preserved, and birdwatching structures will be added along the route. The aim of developing the trails is to direct growing visitor numbers away from the bird-rich Finnoviken basin. Some of the new trails will be built with duckboards, while others will feature lighting and a stone dust surface. A new bridge will be built over the Finnobäcken stream along the pedestrian and cycling route leading north. A variety of trees and shrubs will be planted in the area, while some sections will remain open.
Several studies have been conducted to support the nature-oriented design of the area, and the principles of sustainable landscaping are also being applied. These measures aim to respect the area’s unique natural values, accommodate different user groups, and support biodiversity. Existing vegetation will be preserved and diversified where possible, and additional trees will be planted to secure flying squirrel routes. Some parts of the area will be maintained as open meadows or ruderal habitats.
Some contaminated soil has been identified in the old fill area west of the Finnoviken basin. It has been studied, and a risk assessment has been carried out. According to the assessment, the contaminated soil does not pose a danger. During further planning, the area will be re-examined as needed to ensure there is no risk of exposure.
From the start, the planning process has emphasised broad public engagement, including walking tours of the area for stakeholders. In autumn 2024, walk-along interviews were organised for local nature organisations, resident and recreational associations, and schools.
