Construction of Gräsantori, Rälssitilankatu and Olarinluoma

Streets and trafficTapiola

The City of Espoo Public Works Department has started drawing up a street plan for the streets in the detailed plan areas of Riihitonttu and Gräsantori. The work is related to the detailed plan change and applies to the following streets: Rälssitilankatu, Olarinluoma, the western part of Riihitontuntie and the Gräsantori square. The Technical Services Committee approved the plans on 31 January 2024. Construction begins in March 2026

Project description

The project involves the reconstruction of the streets in the second phase of Rälssitilankatu, Olarinluoma, Riihitontuntie western section, Gräsantori and Tonttumaanpuisto, the Olarinluoma bridge and the Olarsby pedestrian and cycle bridge and park area. The contract mainly involves the construction of streets, park areas, water supply, technical networks, two bridges, pile slabs and foundation reinforcement measures in the above-mentioned areas. A rug washing station will also be built in the park area west of Olarinluoma. The contract site is located in the Niittykumpu district.

Excavators will be utilising a digital model for excavation, which optimises the depth and width of the excavated area, reducing the amount of excavated land and extracted crushed rock. The purpose of these measures is to shorten the contract period and reduce the inconvenience caused to street users.

The carbon dioxide emissions of the contract will also be reduced by using renewable, fossil-free fuels in the earthworks machines and the earth-hauling trucks.

The work will focus on improving traffic safety on the existing streets and the pedestrian and cycling connections. The cross-sections and lane arrangements of the streets will be changed from the current one. The intersection of Rälssitilankatu, Olarinluoma and Riihitontuntie will be a roundabout. Trees and shrubs will be planted on the separators and sidestrips of the streets and walkways. Water supply, telecommunications and energy network lines will be built in the street area.

Gräsantori is a new square formed on the site of a former service station plot in accordance with the plan change. The square will be green with plenty of trees and shrubs. An artwork will be placed in the southwestern part of the square. The square has a reservation for a kiosk/restaurant building. There will be a parking area in the northern part of the square.

The draft plan will be open for comments in the otakantaa.fi service from 2.10.2023 to 16.10.2023. Click this link to access the otakantaa.fi service.(external link, opens in a new window)
